چکیده

Non-Destructive testing is useful in rail, pipeline and aerospace industries for maintenance of equipment, such as thickness measurements, corrosion and defect detection in materials. In this work a finite element analysis of an Electromagnetic acoustic transducer is presented. EMAT is an emerging technology that provides a non contact process of testing materials compared to ultrasonic sensors that requires a coupling medium. The acoustic properties of the material are investigated, which involves the coupling of several physical parameters, which includes mechanical and electromagnetic properties. An investigation of defect detection in an aluminum and steel plate material is conducted. Results obtained shows the model is capable of detecting defects in aluminium and steel plates using an Electromagnetic acoustic transducer.

Multi-Mode Electromagnetic Ultrasonic Lamb Wave Tomography Imaging for Variable-Depth Defects in Metal Plates

This paper proposes a new cross-hole tomography imaging (CTI) method for variable-depth defects in metal plates based on multi-mode electromagnetic ultrasonic Lamb waves (LWs). The dispersion characteristics determine that different modes of LWs are sensitive to different thicknesses of metal plates. In this work, the sensitivities to thickness variation of A0- and S0-mode LWs are theoretically...

Comparison of the defect detection capabilities of flash thermography and vibration excitation shearography

The defect detection capabilities of transient thermography and shearography have been compared using optimum excitation methods for each technique: short pulse heating for thermography and vibration excitation using a piezoelectric transducer for shearography. A signal-to-noise ratio and limit of detection analysis has been performed on defect images obtained by the two techniques using the di...

Time-Frequency Analysis of Acoustic Signals for Flaw Monitoring in Steam Generator Structures

A preliminary study of the feasibility of using piezo-transducer arrays, for detecting flaws in flat aluminum plates and steel tubing, is being performed at The University of Tennessee. The sensor arrays are designed for embedding in aluminum plates and brass tubes. Various forms of defects are placed on the test specimens. Preliminary experiments are carried out using both flat aluminum plate ...

A New Omni-Directional EMAT for Ultrasonic Lamb Wave Tomography Imaging of Metallic Plate Defects

This paper proposes a new omni-directional electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) for the ultrasonic Lamb wave (ULW) tomography imaging (TI) of defects in metallic plates. The proposed EMAT is composed of a permanent magnet and a coil with a contra-flexure structure. This new EMAT coil structure is used for omni-directional ULW transmission and reception and ULW TI for the first time. The t...

Consider a piezoelectric transducer that is attached to the back of a plate-like structure, such as is the case for guided wave structural health monitoring. This transducer may be excited to produce guided waves that propagate outward from the source through the structure. These waves interact with impedance discontinuities in the structure at defects, bond lines, plate boundaries, and other g...
